Sustainable Myanmar Diaries: Taung Bi library now opened

by | Feb 15, 2016 | Our Diary, Sustainability | 0 comments

The library in Taung Bi village, Old Bagan was opened on Friday, February the 12th in a ceremony attended by clients of SKR Reisen, who have sponsored the project, local villagers, Myanmar Diaries staff and some invited guests. This opening is the result of a lot of work and generous donations from international benefactors, and will go a long way towards improving the educational prospects of the villagers.

The ceremony was simple yet memorable, with speeches from the Head of the Village Administration Office, the building’s engineer, the headmaster of the school, and the project’s team leader who is the Office Manager of Myanmar Diaries Travel. The ceremony concluded with the head of Taung Bi village thanking everyone involved for their efforts before a communal meal was served. The atmosphere was fantastic with smiles all around; everyone involved is aware of the enormous benefits this project will bring.

The real highlight of the day, however, was seeing the children’s response to the new library. From opening to close the building was packed full of children exploring their new reading material, and this enthusiasm and excitement should only increase as more and more books and resources arrive. The library currently contains a selection of Burmese and English language children’s books, magazines and textbooks, with a volunteer librarian to curate them from 2:30 – 5:30, five days a week. In future, we hope to expand this collection to include German, French, Spanish and Chinese books for people of all ages, and extend the opening times to enable all the villagers to make use of the facilities.

This library is an incredible project that will change the lives of the villagers of Taung Bi Village, and more donations to this extremely worthwhile cause are always welcome. Responsible tourism is at the heart of our company and projects like this are a great way to give back to a country we are deeply passionate about. Please get in touch if you would like to assist us in helping empower the villagers to improve their future.
