Experience a taste of authentic local life with overnight stays in family homes and monasteries in remote hilltribe villages. From the first step to the last, this Shan State trek is filled with awe-inspiring views and memorable moments.

The detailed program

Shan State Trekking

Day 1 : Start your engine for the unforgettable journey

Lace up your hiking boots for an unforgettable adventure through the southern Shan hills! Take a scenic drive to Myin Ka village and hit the trails. You will first walk through farms and fields, growing rice and seasonal crops. Then start to ascend into the hills, climbing gently sloping trails surrounded by orange and tea plantations. As the day goes on, you will pass through villages of the Danu and Palaung ethnic groups as well as more farms and rural areas.

Today’s trek ends in Mwe Daw village, at a quiet monastery where you will sleep for the evening. After freshening up an early dinner will be served and then it is off to bed for a good night’s rest.

24 kilometers distance and 7 hours walking time.

Day 2 : Higher into the hills

Begin your morning with a simple but filling breakfast in Mwe Daw. Then it’s time to hit the trail and continue your Shan State trek. During today’s walk you will climb higher into the hills using a mix of flat trails and gentle ascents. As with yesterday, the scenery is spectacular with lush farms and rolling hills in every direction. After a stop in Pwe Pyat village for lunch, you pass through a stretch of flat terrain filled with cabbage fields. The trails then take you to the base of the mountains where you will stay this evening. Pay your respects to the head monk of the monastery, then freshen up before enjoying a well-deserved meal and a peaceful night of sleep.

Shan State Trekking- plants

Day 2 : Higher into the hills

Begin your morning with a simple but filling breakfast in Mwe Daw. Then it’s time to hit the trail and continue your Shan State trek. During today’s walk you will climb higher into the hills using a mix of flat trails and gentle ascents. As with yesterday, the scenery is spectacular with lush farms and rolling hills in every direction. After a stop in Pwe Pyat village for lunch, you pass through a stretch of flat terrain filled with cabbage fields. The trails then take you to the base of the mountains where you will stay this evening. 18 kilometers distance and 5 hours walking time.

Day 3 : Discover the ethnic groups and their ways of life

Wake up early this morning, rising as the monks commence their morning activities. Be sure to fuel up with a good breakfast as today is the most challenging day of your Shan State adventure. A 90-minute trek along steep trails lined with tea plantations takes you to a breathtaking viewpoint at the top of the mountain range. It is a difficult but rewarding start to the day! After resting and soaking in the views, continue along the mountain ridge toward Kan Hla Kone village. Along the way there is no rush, so you can stop often to enjoy the pristine nature that surrounds you. You will also pass through many villages inhabited by the Danu, Palaung and other ethnic groups giving abundant opportunities to learn about their unique traditions and ways of life.

Late this afternoon you will cross into Kan Hla Kone village, perhaps tired but certainly satisfied! A peaceful night at a local monastery awaits, along with a home-cooked local dinner.

15 kilometers distance and 4 hours and 30 minutes walking time.

Day 4 : Through vibrant rice paddies which dot the landscape

Another epic day of hiking awaits! Start the morning with breakfast at the monastery then venture deeper into the hills. During the first half of the day you will descend down the hills, passing by thick forest, charming villages and cascading falls. You will reach the valley around midday and, after lunch, continue across the flatlands where vibrant rice paddies dot the landscape. Take a short rest to catch your breath before the last stretch of today’s journey, which takes you up and down rolling hills to the village of Khan Taung. Spend this evening in a local house, experiencing the tranquility and rhythm of life in the village.

16 kilometers distance and 5 hours walking time.

 

Day 4 : Through vibrant rice paddies which dot the landscape

Another epic day of hiking awaits! Start the morning with breakfast at the monastery then venture deeper into the hills. 16 kilometers distance and 5 hours walking time.

Day 5 : Farewell of the journey

Your final day on the trails is a short one, but still filled with great views. Say farewell to your hosts after breakfast and start the descent, passing tea plantations along the way. After 90 minutes you will arrive in Pyin Thar village where your adventure comes to an end. Hop into the car and rest your legs as you drive to Nyaung Shwe.
