Contrasts of the city

Our Myanmar photo journey starts and finishes in Yangon. The country’s largest city offers up a great contrast of old and new as well as a chance to experience your first taste of local life. You will visit downtown on foot, taking a look at historic colonial buildings and turning down narrow lanes for photos of hidden markets. A ride on the slow-moving circular train let’s you mingle with snack vendors while also being able to snapshots of passing suburban street scenes. And of course, no visit to Yangon would be complete without a trip to Shwedagon Pagoda. Be sure to have your camera batteries charged up- not only will you want to snap pictures if the gold-covered stupa, but also of the fervent spiritual rituals happening on the pagoda platform.

Colorful local life

Thanks to Rudyard Kipling’s writing, the name ‘Mandalay’ conjures up glittering pagodas, tropical weather and exotic cultures in the minds of many. These days the city is a bustling commercial hub that can appear busy and overcrowded at times. But we know where ‘Kipling’s Mandalay’ still exists and share these photographic experiences with our shutterbug guests. Start early in the morning with a visit to Mahamuni Pagoda, home to one of Myanmar’s most sacred Buddha images. Snap photos as local devotees come to pray and place gold leaf on this auspicious statue. Then it’s on to Thaye Market, a sprawling market place on the train tracks selling everything from fresh produce to fiery spices. The colors and energy is amazing but gets even better when the train comes along at midmorning. Snap photos as the vendors race to get their stalls off the tracks in time!  As well during your time in Mandalay, you will get plenty of chances to capture images of amazing pagodas at the perfect time of day and watch the sunrise over U Bein Bridge. Mandalay never fails to impress photographers!

Untouched Nature & Exotic Ethnic Groups

Once you have had your fill of photographing monuments, it’s time to capture images of nature and traditional life. Loikaw is the perfect area for this! The capital of the Kayah State is surrounded by villages where traditional Kayan culture (also referred to by the Shan name, ‘Padaung’) is untouched by time. We suggest a full day trip, crossing through several villages on foot to get a better understanding of these incredible cultures. Meet with ‘long neck women’, who proudly wear coiled brass bands around their neck. Discover the unusual practices of the Kayan animists, who worship a range of protective spirits, and see locals wearing the traditional dress even in these modern times. Of course, throughout the day you will be surrounded by unspoiled nature and colorful farmland, offering up brilliant hues of greens, yellows and blues to fill your camera lens.
