12 Days – Myanmar Explorer

Designed for the intrepid traveler, our Myanmar Explorer holiday includes visits to the main sites as well as some off-the-beaten-track towns. Moving through the countryside by car, boat, and train, our Explorer tour provides great opportunities for discovering the true ways of life of the Myanmar people while venturing through beautiful scenery along the way.

The detailed program

Day 1 : Yangon Arrival

 

Mingalabar and welcome to Myanmar! Enjoy an introductory tour of Yangon starting with a visit to the massive reclining Buddha at Kyauktatgyi Pagoda. Continue to the lush, green Kandawgyi Park, home to a glittering replica of a royal barge, and venture through markets selling various, unique, religious items. As the day comes to a close, head to the Shwedagon Pagoda, Myanmar’s holiest site, and watch the setting sun cast its rays on the gilded stupa.

Day 2 : Yangon – Bagan

Take a short, domestic flight to Bagan, a former royal kingdom home to more than 2,000 red brick monuments. Climb atop an elevated temple platform for sweeping panoramic views, explore a variety of temples, discover ancient carvings and paintings, and marvel at the sheer number of temples dotting the landscape. Visit a local workshop making traditional lacquerware before catching the sunset on a private riverboat cruise.

Day 2 : Yangon – Bagan

 

Take a short, domestic flight to Bagan, a former royal kingdom home to more than 2,000 red brick monuments. Climb atop an elevated temple platform for sweeping panoramic views, explore a variety of temples, discover ancient carvings and paintings, and marvel at the sheer number of temples dotting the landscape. Visit a local workshop making traditional lacquerware before catching the sunset on a private riverboat cruise.

Day 3 : Bagan

 

Continue your Bagan exploration with a mix of villages, pagodas, and landscapes. Start at a vibrant local market to catch a glimpse of daily life before driving to the countryside to visit some lesser-known religious structures tucked amid villages and farms. Travel by horse-drawn carriage this afternoon through the temple plains, stopping for photos or more temple exploration, and catch the sunset from an elevated location.

Day 4 : Bagan – Pakokku – Monywa

Today travel to Monywa, a fascinating journey through rural Myanmar. Start with a boat trip up the Irrawaddy River enjoying scenes of life on the river as the boat slowly makes its way north. Disembark in Pakokku, a typical mid-sized town and continue by land to Monywa. The scenery varies from farmland to dry, sandy plains. There will be plenty of opportunities to stop for photos or to visit small villages.

Day 4 : Bagan – Pakokku – Monywa

 

Today travel to Monywa, a fascinating journey through rural Myanmar. Start with a boat trip up the Irrawaddy River enjoying scenes of life on the river as the boat slowly makes its way north. Disembark in Pakokku, a typical mid-sized town and continue by land to Monywa. The scenery varies from farmland to dry, sandy plains. There will be plenty of opportunities to stop for photos or to visit small villages.

Day 5 : Monywa – Powintaung – Mandalay

 

Set off on an adventure this morning, traveling by local open-air jeeps to the famed Po Win Taung caves. Explore this astonishing structure of 947 sandstone caves which are filled with mural paintings and Buddhist statues and continue to Shwe Ba Taung where temples are carved in stony, slender cliffs. Then move on to Mandalay, a 3.5 hour drive, stopping en route to visit sites such as Thanboddhay Pagoda and a massive standing Buddha.

Day 6 : Sagaing – Ava – Amarapura

Discover the best of Mandalay and its surroundings today. Start with a journey across the Irrawaddy River to Sagaing, the religious hub of Myanmar, and visit famous monasteries and nunneries as well as local markets and pottery villages. Continue to Ava, a former royal capital, whose faded ruins provide an atmospheric backdrop to learning about the history of Myanmar. The day comes to a close with a visit to Amarapura while watching the sunset at U Bein Bridge, the world’s longest teak bridge.

Day 6 : Sagaing – Ava – Amarapura

 

Discover the best of Mandalay and its surroundings today. Start with a journey across the Irrawaddy River to Sagaing, the religious hub of Myanmar, and visit famous monasteries and nunneries as well as local markets and pottery villages. Continue to Ava, a former royal capital, whose faded ruins provide an atmospheric backdrop to learning about the history of Myanmar. The day comes to a close with a visit to Amarapura while watching the sunset at U Bein Bridge, the world’s longest teak bridge.

Day 7 : Mandalay – Yankin Hill

 

Today begins with a visit to Mahamuni Pagoda where the revered Buddha image has taken on a “lumpy” texture thanks to the many years of gold leaf application by local worshippers. Explore the impressive Kuthodaw Pagoda, with more than 700 inscribed marble slabs, the intricate wood carvings at Shwenandaw Kyaung Pagoda and enjoy fabulous views from Yankin Hill. Meet with Buddhist monks in the late afternoon to engage in conversation and to observe their evening chants–a truly unforgettable and unique experiencee

Day 8 : Mandalay – Heho – Pindaya – Kalaw

Fly to Shan State this morning and embark on a scenic drive to Pindaya. This small town is tucked amid lush hills and is home to the Danu people, one of Myanmar’s many ethnic groups. Visit the market, filled with produce grown in the surrounding hills and hike to a tea plantation. Day 9 : Kalaw – Inle by Train

 

A ride on a scenic, slow-moving train will go through beautiful countrysides towards the famed Inle Lake. Upon reaching the lake’s shores, board a long-tail boat and venture out onto the waters observing leg-rowing fishermen on the way, passing villages with houses on stilts and floating gardens while enjoying the fresh air out on the lake. Stop at the lake’s most famous temple–Phaung Daw Oo–and visit workshops where traditional craft techniques have been passed down from generation to generationn.

Day 10 : Inle Lake – Indein

Discover what life is truly like for Inle Lake’s residents with a morning excursion to the rotating five-day market. A colorful affair, the market moves locations every day to ensure all of the lake’s residents have access to the fresh produce and local dry goods being sold. This afternoon, a hike to a local village through the ruins of Indein highlights the history and natural beauty of Inle Lake; it will be a great last day of adventure in Shan State.

Day 10 : Inle Lake – Indein

 

Discover what life is truly like for Inle Lake’s residents with a morning excursion to the rotating five-day market. A colorful affair, the market moves locations every day to ensure all of the lake’s residents have access to the fresh produce and local dry goods being sold. This afternoon, a hike to a local village through the ruins of Indein highlights the history and natural beauty of Inle Lake; it will be a great last day of adventure in Shan State.

Day 11 : Inle Lake – Heho – Yangon

Return to Yangon today with ample time to explore the many sites of the former capital. The day is free to wander the vibrant downtown streets, to discover the thriving art scene, or to purchase souvenirs for friends and family from the historic Bogyoke Market.

Day 12 : Yangon Departure

Today is open for last-minute sight-seeing or shopping. A private transfer is included to the international airport for your onward flight. Lunch will be on your own. Unfortunately, it is time to say goodbye to this beautiful country. We hope that you have enjoyed your holiday and that you will go home with long-lasting memories.

Today is open for last-minute sight-seeing or shopping. A private transfer is included to the international airport for your onward flight. Lunch will be on your own. Unfortunately, it is time to say goodbye to this beautiful country.
