Mrauk U – The Lost Kingdom of the Arakan

Setting off from the former capital of Yangon, the first stop is the town of Sittwe with its bustling market. From here a boat trip takes you to the last royal capital of Rakhine–Mrauk U. This is an architectural delight with Buddhist temples and pagodas galore with the highlight perhaps being the ruins of the 15th-century Royal Palace. A further trip takes you to experience the culture and lifestyle of a local Chin tribe with their splendid tattooed women!

The detailed program

Day 1 : Yangon – Sittwe

You will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the airport for a domestic flight to Sittwe, the regional capital and main gateway for the Rakhine (Arakan) state. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel for check-in and a chance to freshen up. Then, set off for a short tour of Sittwe. As the day comes to an end, take a walk down the riverside where locals gather to relax in the evening hours and vendors sell local snacks. For sunset, transfer to an elevated viewpoint located on the southern bounds of the city and enjoy a lovely sunset over Sittwe’s bay. Return to your hotel for the evening.

Day 2 : Sittwe – Mrauk U

After an early breakfast, you’ll be setting off by car to visit the Sittwe fish market where, in the morning hours, fishermen are loading up their fresh catch from the night before. Transfer a short distance to the jetty and board a local boat for an upstream voyage on the Kaladan River (5-6 hours depending on the current) to Mrauk U, the last royal capital of Rakhine. You will reach Mrauk U in the early afternoon and after you have checked-in, you will start your exploration. This fantastic day comes to a close as you travel to an elevated location for a panoramic view over the temples at sunset. Return to your hotel for a relaxed evening.

     Day 2 : Sittwe – Mrauk U

Day 3 : Mrauk U

Start early today to watch the beautiful sunrise from an elevated viewpoint. Enjoy the morning dawn light cast its changing light over the mystical temples of Mrauk U. After breakfast, you will continue your sight-seeing adventure of Mrauk U with a bike ride to explore local villages. In the afternoon, you will explore some famous monuments and as the day comes to a close, travel to our favorite vantage point where you’ll be amazed at the changing light of the Mrauk U temples. A nice glass of wine or a chilled local beer is the perfect way to end the day.

Day 4 : Mrauk U – Chin Villages

Today, embark on an adventurous excursion to the Chin villages around Mrauk U. Start with a jeep trip on a rarely travelled road (approximately 20 kilometers – 45 minutes) to the edges of the Lay Myo River. Board a small boat and journey up the river to visit villages where the Chin people are living. Exploring the villages, you will see how little life has changed over the centuries for the local Laytoo Chin people who are famous for their tattooed faces. Having finished this morning’s exploration, you will return to your boat for the journey back to Mrauk U. A picnic lunch will be served on board. Upon reaching the boat jetty, return by jeep to Mrauk U, arriving in the early evening.

Day 4 : Mrauk U – Chin Villages

Day 5 : Mrauk U – Sittwe – Thandwe/Yangon

After breakfast, drive to the jetty and board a local chartered boat to take you back to Sittwe. Upon reaching Sittwe, transfer to the airport for your flight to Yangon or onto Thandwe, home to beautiful Ngapali beach.
