Destinations : Bagan, Mandalay

Duration: 5 days

Embark on a luxurious cruise along the majestic Irrawaddy River aboard The Strand from Bagan to Mandalay. Enjoy 5 days of pure indulgence and discover the sights along the river between Bagan and Mandalay.

The detailed program

Day 1 : Bagan Embarkation

Welcome to The Strand! A welcome breakfast will be served at one of Bagan’s oldest traditional lacquerware workshops–a special start to this 5-day adventure. From there, set off to explore famous temples such as the Shwezigon Pagoda and the Ananda Temple. Then, transfer to the jetty and board The Strand. There is time to unpack and settle in. After lunch continue exploring Bagan’s temple-studded plains with visits to more magnificent monuments. Return to the ship for sunset cocktails and a gourmet dinner under the stars.

Day 2 : BAGAN

After a leisurely breakfast, the ship casts off for the first day of sailing. The first stop is on the western side of the Irrawaddy River. Transfer by jeep to the hill-top pagoda of Tant Kyi Taung which offers spectacular views of Bagan, the river, and the surrounding landscape. Return to the ship and continue sailing northwards, enjoying scenes of riverine life passing by and the spires of Bagan’s monuments fading in to the distance. Lunch as well as traditional afternoon tea will be served. As the sun begins to set, The Strand will moor by the riverside or by a sandbank. Another wonderful sunset is followed by a dinner and an on-board cultural performance.

Day 3 : MINGUN

The ship continues its way upriver today. The morning is at your leisure. On the ship, you can enjoy the passing views, relax with a book on the sundeck, take a swim in the pool, or get a massage treatment at the spa. After lunch, disembark in Mingun, a small riverside village that was prominent in the late 1700s. Travel by local tuk tuk to explore the sites including the huge Mingun Bell, the Hsinbyume Pagoda with its curved white terraces, and the crumbling, brick Pahtodawgyi Pagoda. Return to the ship and later in the evening, enjoy dinner with local entertainment on a sandbank in the middle of the river (Note: location may change dependent on the water’s elevation).

Day 4 : Mandalay – SAGAING

Today is spent exploring Mandalay and its surrounding ancient cities. Start with a visit to U Bein Bridge, a 1.2-kilometer teak bridge built out of salvaged pillars from the Royal Palace when it was dismantled and moved to Mandalay in 1857. Continue on to Mahamuni Pagoda which houses the most holy Buddha image in Mandalay and is covered in so much gold leaf that it appears lumpy. Make a stop in the beautiful wooden Shweinbin Monastery before returning to the ship. After lunch, the shore excursions continue with a visit to Sagaing, the Buddhist center of Myanmar, and Ava where the ruins of the former royal capital will be explored by horse-drawn carriage. The day is closed out with a special champagne toast on The Strand and a fantastic Shan-style farewell dinner with traditional performances.
