Food and dining play an important role in Myanmar culture and this morning you’ll get a chance to get a taste- literally- of the local lifestyle. Your morning will begin with a visit to the sprawling morning market near the town centre. Accompanied by your guide, you will explore the seemingly endless stalls filled with fruits, vegetables, meats, spices and an entire range of other items. The kaleidoscope of colours on display and smells of the exotic fruits and spices are just part of the experience. Watching the interaction between buyers and vendors and the bustle of activity in packing and transporting the goods is equally fascinating to witness.

Escape from the chaotic market place to a local tea shop where you will relax with a cup of tea. An integral part of daily life, sitting at the tea shop will give you a chance to observe the activities of the tea shop, where local residents come to socialize and discuss business, as well as sample some items on the menu.

Having whetted your appetite, it’s now time to start cooking. You will transfer to a small guesthouse where your host chef will be waiting for you. Donning a locally-made chef’s apron, you’ll join your enthusiastic host to prepare a variety of dishes. Over the course of 1.5 hours you’ll learn about the traditions of Myanmar food and its preparation with a combination of hands-on participation and demonstration by the chef. Different techniques and tools, such as mortar and pestle, and ingredients key to making local dishes such as salads and curries will be explained. At the end of the class, sit down to a delicious lunch which you have helped prepare.
