Float across the Gardens of Inle Lake
After enjoying the main sites of Inle Lake, it is time to slow down and appreciate the wonders of Myanmar’s most remarkable waterway. Travel to a quiet corner of the lake in the late afternoon where a small, wooden canoe awaits. These vessels are traditionally used by farmers, who paddle them through the floating gardens as they pick vegetables. The canoes are able to carry heavy loads of produce and are surprisingly stable.
Inle Lake’s floating gardens promenade
Once seated in the canoe, your driver will push off from the pier and start paddling. Close your eyes and enjoy the solitude that surrounds you. Instead of noisy, motorized engines, the quiet sounds of the paddles hitting the water are likely to be the only sounds you hear.
Myanmar’s unique Inle Lake floating gardens
The canoe will pass through floating gardens, one of Inle Lake’s most unique wonders. These mini-farms produce an impressive amount of tomatoes, chillies, and other produce that are sold throughout the country. As you slowly pass by you will get a chance to see how they are constructed, with the lake’s water hyacinths bundled together to make “islands” that are then held together by bamboo poles.
Inle Lake’s perfect photo spot
Continue gliding along the water using small channels to meander between the gardens. There are unlikely to be any other boats around but you may catch sight of a farmer at work tending crops or traveling home with a boat full of freshly harvested vegetables. The late afternoon light casts a beautiful color across the gardens, creating endless photo opportunities of this unique landscape.
After a half hour of coasting through Inle Lake’s floating gardens in solitude, return to the jetty where your motor boat is waiting.
