Airport Tax

It is important to note that there is a $10.00 departure tax per person when leaving Myanmar. Keep a $10.00 bill handy in perfect condition to pay this tax prior to departure. This tax is not included in the cost of tours with Myanmar Diaries but we can take care of this charge for you upon request. There is no tax for domestic flights in Myanmar.

 

Best Time to Travel

Myanmar is tropical and influenced by the monsoons and there are distinct 3 seasons. Travel is possible throughout the year however it is better to plan your trip to some places with the following in mind.

Best travel time is the winter (November - February) when it is dry and rather cool (20-30°C) and little humidity. It seldom rains in these months.
In the mountain areas of the Shan and Chin states, it can get very cold at night. The northern state of Kachin often experience snow quite often. Warm clothing is advised for those travelling to Mrauk Oo.

Do’s and Don’ts

There are some customs and beliefs held in Myanmar that travelers should be aware of before coming to the country in order to avoid offending any of the locals. A key concept in Myanmar is called “Cetana”, it is a word used to emphasize goodwill, good intentions and benevolence.

Domestic Airlines

There are four major airlines in the nation of Myanmar, they are:

  • Air Bagan (private airline)
  • Air Mandalay (private airline)
  • Asian Wings (private airline)
  • Myanmar Airways (government airline)


Each of Myanmar’s airlines operate with different flight schedules depending on the time of year.

Elderly People

Road conditions can be pretty rough and travel uncomfortable. Long road trips should be avoided particularly the older people and those who might not be so hale and hard. So it's probably wise not to consider trips from Bagan to Kalaw or Inle Lake to Mandalay. The same goes for Jeeps rides for example in places like Monywa to Po Win Taung. By advising us in advance if such a trip is planned we may be able to make things a bit easier for you.
