Day 1

Yangon - Shwedagon PagodaArrival Yangon – Mingalabar Myanmar

Arrival in Yangon according to individual flight schedule.

Mingalabar and welcome to Myanmar! The former capital Yangon, also known as Rangoon, has a rich colonial background and religious legacy which makes it one of the most tantalizing and authentic places in all of Southeast Asia. Upon arrival at the airport, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to you hotel for check in. At 16.00 meet your guide and group in the hotel lobby and set off on a walking tour of downtown! This is a great opportunity to really “get your feet wet” and soak up the vibrant atmosphere, learn about the city’s history and discover the local culture. We’ll explore Chinatown, Hindu and Buddhist temples and meander through local markets.  There’s also some very old and unique colonial buildings still standing throughout the city that are remnants from when the British occupied what was then called Burma.

Lunch on own account. Welcome dinner in a local restaurant. Overnight in Yangon.

Day 2

Inle Lake - FishermenYangon – Heho – Inle Lake

Fly north to Inle Lake this morning, leaving the busy city behind you and traveling to the cooler hills of Shan State. You will first arrive at Nyaung Shwe which is the gateway to Inle Lake. Upon reaching the lake, take a boat trip, passing by floating gardens and traditional Intha villages built on stilts as you travel along the tranquil waters.  Stop to see famous pagodas and monasteries, watch the agile leg-rowing fishermen and visit incredible craft workshops where items such as lotus silk is woven. Return to your hotel before sunset.

Day 3

Inle Lake - IndeinInle Lake – Indein

Continue exploring Inle Lake today, starting with a visit to the morning market where an array of goods and produce are sold. The next stop is Indein, a Pa-oh village located at the end of a long, winding canal on the lake’s western edge. Take a short hike to the top of the hill to admire the hundreds of stupa ruins, many of which are overgrown with foliage and vines,  and see fabulous views of the lake. Return across the lake to your hotel in the late afternoon.

Day 4

Inle Lake - Pindaya Pagoda

Inle Lake – Pindaya

After breakfast you will visit the village of Khaung Daing and you will have the chance to get to know the people’s daily life. Walk through the narrow streets and just watch the morning activities. Kaung Daing is very popular for its tofu and bean production.

From there, you will drive to Pindaya (90km; 3 hours) a quiet town on the banks of the serene Botoloke Lake. Visit the renowned Pindaya caves, a unique site housing thousands of Buddha images estimated to have been formed more than 200 million years ago. The opening of the cave involves a walk past the Shwe U Min Pagodas – giant white stupas which rise out of the ground.

Take the short walk to a nearby village, where you will meet with a local family to learn about the cultivation of tea, tea leaf salad and other regional delicacies.

Day 5

Mandalay Kuthodaw PagodaPindaya – Mandalay

Welcome to Mandalay! Mandalay, the second largest city of Myanmar and one of the ancient royal capitals, is often perceived and described in literature as timeless. Located on the banks of the Irrawaddy River, this is where the cultural heart of Myanmar lies! Transfer to your hotel and check-in.

Day 6

Mandalay - U-Bein-Bridge

Mandalay – Amarapura

After breakfast you will start your tour with a visit of the Mahamumi Pagoda. This pagoda houses one of the country’s most honored Buddha images which is completely covered in gold leaves that are applied everyday by male devotees.

In the afternoon, you will visit the Kuthodaw Pagoda, frequently dubbed as “The World’s Biggest Book” for its collection of 729 marble slabs inscribed with Buddhist teachings. Next visit Kyauktawgyi Pagoda, known as the pagoda of the Great Marble Image. Admire the huge Buddha, carved from a single block of marble.  Then it’s off to the Shwenandaw Monastery, the Golden Monastery that is the only enduring structure from the Royal Palace of the 19th century.

Before sunset you will make a trip to Amarapura, Myanmar’s former royal capital. Continue a short distance to the legendary U Bein Bridge, which was built in 1782. It spans 1.2 km across the shallow Taungthaman Lake and is said to be the longest teak wood bridge worldwide. Enjoy this very special atmosphere as the late afternoon sun casts long shadows and illuminates the local people heading home.

Day 7

Bagan-PanoramaMandalay – Bagan

In the morning you will explore the life at the river during a nice walk along the majestic Irrawaddy River. You will visit a local market where all kinds of exotic fruit and vegetables are sold. There are barely any tourists coming here and it is a great opportunity to gather some unique impressions off the beaten track. From there, a short 45 minute transfer (30 km) will bring you to Paleik, which is known locally as the home of the snake temple. With a little luck you may be able to witness a snake washing which is supposed to bring fortune. Afterward, you will be taken to Bagan on the new, scenic road. During the 5 hour drive (304 km) you can enjoy the beautiful landscape and will arrive in Bagan in the late afternoon.

The majestic Bagan is about the size of Manhattan and with more than 4,000 ancient pagodas, it is one of the highlights on every travel list for Myanmar.

The rest of the day is free at leisure.

Day 8

Bagan - PagodaBagan

Optional: Balloon ride over Bagan

You can start your morning with an exciting hot-air balloon ride above the Bagan countryside. You will observe one-of-a-kind views as the sun begins to rise over the Irrawaddy River and  stupas in the region.  (Only available from October to March – in case of cancellation on spot due to unfavorable weather conditions, full amount will be refunded.)

After breakfast, your guide and driver will pick you up to start your Bagan excursion. First stop is the vibrant Nyaung Oo Market. From here you will have a look around the Old Bagan starting with a visit to the renowned Shwezigon Pagoda. From here you will have a look around the Ananda Temple – one of the most exalted of Bagan’s temples. We will ensure that our tour reaches this point before the majority of tourists arrive, enabling you to enjoy the splendor of the temple in relative tranquility.

You will be driven late in the afternoon to the jetty where a private wooden river boat awaits you. You’ll be treated to fabulous views as you cruise down the Irrawaddy River.  The perfect end to a busy day of sightseeing in Bagan!

Day 9

Yangon - DowntownBagan – Yangon

Transfer to Bagan airport for your flight to Yangon in the morning.

Visit Kyaukhtatgyi Pagoda to see a 70 meter long reclining Buddha statue around the size of a blue whale. Afterwards, you continue uptown in order to make a quick stop by the Royal Lake located in Kandawgyi Park which is very popular with local residents, especially in the early morning and around sunset. Catch a view of Karaweik Hall, a reproduction of a royal barge and enjoy a spectacular view of the Golden Shwedagon Pagoda.

Check in (from 2 pm) and free time in the hotel.

No Myanmar expedition can be considered truly great if it’s lacking a visit to the legendary Shwedagon Pagoda. Are you ready for an amazing experience? Witness the colours transform on the 100-meter chedi, which is covered in over 40 tons of tiny, gold leaves.  Shwedagon is considered to be the most important religious site for the Burmese and most visitors report that the trip is still etched in their minds.

Day 10
