Wake up early and walk to the Putao Market, a daily market that attracts buyers and sellers from many of the regions ethnic groups. Then the real adventure begins with a 5-hour hike to Namtunkoo. The trek passes through crops and fields before entering a tropical evergreen forest where the path begins to climb up in to the hills. A picnic lunch will be served at a scenic spot before continuing to Namtunkoo. The village is home to the Lisu ethnic group and located in the Namhtun Mountain range at around 680 meters in elevation. The evening will be spent in a simple yet adequate guesthouse run by the local Lisu.
Dinner and overnight at Namhtun guest house.
Loop back to Putao today by a combination of walking and driving. Say good bye to the host families in Namtunkoo and commence the trek which follows the Namhtun creek for 2.5 km. The next three hours of trekking showcase the diversity of the Putao region including bamboo forests, sub-tropical forests and flat farm lands. Spectacular views fill the day including glimpses of the Mula creek winding through the Putao plain. In the afternoon arrive in Mulashidi village where a jeep is waiting for the drive back to Putao. Dinner and overnight at Putao Lodge.
Enjoy an exciting excursion to Machanbaw, a charming town about 20 km from Putao that is home to some colonial-style buildings. Upon reaching the beautiful Malikha River, continue on foot across a suspension bridge to reach the town of Manchanbaw. A leisurely walk through town takes in the market, historic sites and local culture including the ‘dragon park’ on the outside of town where the natural rock formations resemble dragons and snakes. Return to Putao in time for a late lunch and a relaxing afternoon in town. Dinner and overnight at Putao Trekking House.
Spend the day on foot and bike to visit areas on the outskirts of Putao. The first option is to Mudon which includes visits to villages inhabited by Lisu and Shan people, an unusual Buddha image and a plateau with panoramic views of the Putao valley and the distant snow-capped mountains. Alternatively visit the area around Hopaing which has bamboo groves, paddy fields and Shan villages. Either way, the day is sure to be another unique adventure in the far north of Myanmar.
Today is free at leisure until transferring to the airport for an onward flight. Depending on departure time, there may be time to visit the morning market again or head out for another village excursion (own account)
